Canon has come up with the latest EOS 100D which is said to be world’s smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR till now. The EOS 100D is a fully-featured, responsive DSLR that is really small and, light enough to take everywhere. The camera seems to be especially attractive for the professionals as well as the normal users who desire the best picture quality but at the same time a far less bulky and complex as SLR series.
The Canon EOS 100D (also called the digital REBEL SL1 in North America) offers 18 megapixels which incorporates phase-detect autofocus technology and has 14 bit digic 5 processor. It offers features like ‘Hybrid CMOS AF II’ system with 80% frame coverage, a 3” Clear View capacitive touchscreen LCD screen, a 63-zone metering sensor, 9 AF points.
Standard ISO setting of 100-12800 which is also expandable to 25600, allows shooting images that are low in noise but full of atmosphere. It provides the advantage of continuous shooting with 4fps speed which is quite appreciable. The 100D’s video mode offers 1080p Full HD recording at 24/25/30fps and 720p HD capture at either 50 or 60fps, with full manual control over exposure and gain.
The new 18-55mm lens bears an STM suffix (which stands for Stepping Motor) to denote its improved performance in live view mode, and smoother, quieter focusing during video capture.
It works superbly with less complex buttons on the panel. Also, the touchscreen comes in useful when setting the autofocus point in live view mode and for zooming into photos and assigning star ratings during the viewfinder. The view finder still gives best results, with extremely fast performance from the primary 9-point autofocus sensor and photos captured every 0.5 seconds autofocus point in live view mode, and for zooming into photos and assigning star ratings during playback.
The attention grabbing feature of the camera is its “Simple operation with fantastic results”.
Canon’s Scene Intelligent Auto technology analyses the scene and sets the most appropriate cameras settings automatically. And a built-in Feature Guide teaches how to get the most from the camera as the user’s photography develops. Tracking and shooting fast moving subjects becomes effectively easier at 4 fps and advantage of nine AF points to focus swiftly and accurately, even with off-centre subjects is truly amazing.
The camera provides the facility to Capture Full HD movies. Shooting high-quality video at resolutions up to Full-HD (1080p) has become possible using this small camera. Control of exposure, focusing, sound and more can be taken. Video Snapshot mode is used to capture edited movie sequences in-camera. Hybrid CMOS AF II provides continuous focusing while shooting, ideal for keeping moving subjects sharp.
Users can express their creative side with using one of the EOS 100D’s Creative filters. Extra Effect Shot captures a filtered and unfiltered shot simultaneously. Features like Grainy Black & White, Toy Camera, Miniature Effect and more can be chosen and also, the effect of each filter can be previewed before shooting.
The EOS 100D offers the facility of choosing various shooting modes. Theme-based Scene modes automatically choose the right camera settings for the subject of shooting. Options like Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Kids, Food and more can be chosen.
